September Mission
Boys Home

For 104 years, Boys Home has been providing residential care and education for boys ages 6 to 18who are socially and economically disadvantaged. No child is turned away due to their family’s inability to pay. It takes over $500.00 PER CHILD to provide these young men with clothes, underwear, shoes, and school supplies for the year. By Providing residential education, the Boys Home continues to focus on socially and economically disadvantaged young men aged 6 to 18. They operate with 97% private funds, so your donations are important.

Haiti—The Haiti trip planned for November for the Mountain to Mountain Partnership has been cancelled. While the area around Beaudin Jean Pierre is quite calm, there have been ongoing protests in Port-au-Prince that have blocked the highway that would take the team to Beaudin Jean Pierre, and, based on the recommendations of our contacts in Haiti, the trip has been cancelled.

This is a time for prayer and patience in this important work. There is a meeting Sept 26th at Christ Church Marion, anyone that would like to go is welcome to join Jon Greene (540-553-5846 or greenej@vt.edu ) for the drive.

Preparing for Next Sunday

Lamentations 1:1-6
Lamentations 3:19-26
2 Timothy 1:1-14
Luke 17:5-10

The Old Testament text for next week is from Lamentations, a book traditionally attributed to Jeremiah the prophet we have been studying for several weeks. The opening six verses of this text from Lamentations sketches, in eerily unsettling images the desolation of Jerusalem after its destructions. The response is the lament from Psalm 137 sung by the rivers of Babylon, calling for God to display some form of just response to the destruction of Jerusalem. For the epistolary reading, we have the Pauline reminiscence from the opening chapter of Second Timothy where, among other things, Paul places his complete trust in God. Faith's leveraging capacity against tremendous odds and a sense of our own inadequacy before God are treated in the sayings of Jesus from the Gospel of Luke.

  •  Campus Ministry

Roger reported that Red Door is off to a strong start this year with about 10 active students and a long list of interested students.

Red Doors’ mission this year will focus on students with food insecurity. The goal is to grow a food pantry at Red Door with donations of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items for students in need.

The ministry will be asking for donated meals once again this year. Roger will post a sign up sheet in the parish hall.

  • Junior Warden’s Report

The AC unit in the rector’s and parish administrator’s offices has failed, so Mark is looking into several different options for replacing this unit.

Due to leaks and needed repairs, vestry voted to replace all toilets in the Vest building with modern fixtures.

Mark will schedule a special work day to address the Bullard Room stairwell repair and several other minor repairs.

  • Senior Warden’s Report

A meeting is scheduled for Sept. 15 to continue discussions to form an ecumenical campus ministry, joining Grace, Unity Christian Church, the Lutheran Church and the Presbyterian Church.

  • Rector’s Report

A decision was made to accept Larry Sam’s proposal to install an accessibility ramp between the church and the Vest building breezeway.

A Vestry retreat is scheduled for Sunday September 29 from 12:30-4:00.

The parish picnic is Sunday September 15. At Bissette Park.

Vestry will meet on the first  Wednesday of the month at 6:30 for the remainder of the year.
