July Mission
Red Door Campus Ministry

Red Door Ministry is our Campus Ministry at Radford University. The monthly mission for July will be to help with additional support beyond what is provided by the Diocesan Higher Education Committee to continue its missional work among the collegiate community at Radford.

Donations received this month will go toward covering the costs of food items not otherwise provided on regular Monday Night meetings, outreach events, gifts given during finals week, and student attendance at retreats and work weekends at ministries like Boys Home and Grace House. This funding will also support other campus groups like UKirk.

Vestry will meet Tuesday, July 9 at 6:00

The Way of Love: Joining God group meets on Sunday, July 7 at 9:15 in the Vestry Conference Room.

The Finance Committee will meet on Wednesday, July 10 at 5:30.

Becoming the Beloved Community Pilgrimage at Bisset Park August 17 starting at 3:30—Dr. Wornie Reed, Professor, Sociology and Africana Studies, Director, Race and Social Policy Research Center, Virginia Tech will be speaking.

Vacation Bible School July 7 -10--Volunteers are needed to lead Bible Story Time each night. We also need help with meal prep on Tuesday, July 8. A sign up sheet is in the parish hall.

Mountain to Mountain Partnership (M2M). The M2M partnership is the Haiti collaborative of six parishes in DIOSWVA that is supporting St. Paul’s School in Beaudin Jean Pierre Haiti. For the 2018-2019 School Year M2M was able to pay the teachers and administrators salaries through August 2019, provided lunches for about 200 students throughout the school year and provide $1000 for educational supplies. For 2019-2020 we intend to provide the same support and to visit to better understand how we can best support them. Potential projects include:

  • expanding classroom space by adding two additional classrooms (there are currently four) so that school could serve grades beyond the sixth grade

  • a water project (there is no water in the community)

  • a solar project

The plan is to visit in late October or early November. Does a trip to Haiti sound interesting to you? Might you be interested in getting involved in this ministry? Please contact Jon Greene if you feel called ( greenej@vt.edu 540-553-5846).

Coats for Kids is Seeking Donations—Gently-used coats, jackets, and sweatshirts will find a good home when donated to the annual Coats for Kids drive sponsored by the Radford Clothing Bank. Coats for Kids provides in-good-condition winter wear for school children (pre-school through high school) throughout the New River Valley. The items are cleaned free of charge by Cook's Clean Center. Please bring donations to the Radford Clothing Bank either during hours of operation or by leaving in the donation box outside the door. (10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon Thurs-Fri-Sat and 4:00-6:00 pm Thurs). Donations are appreciated from now through August 1.The coats will be distributed in early October at the Clothing Bank.

 Preparing for Next Sunday
Amos 7:7-17
Psalm 82
Colossians 1:1-14
Luke 10:25-37

The prophet Amos tells of a conversation with the Lord when the Lord called him and said, "See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by.” Amos tried to get out of being called to prophesy but couldn’t. In Paul’s letter to the Colossians we hear Paul also calling and sending them, asking them through a life of prayer to “lead lives worthy of the Lord.” From Luke’s Gospel we hear the parable of the Good Samaritan in answer to the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”  What other themes do you find in these readings?
