July Mission
Red Door Campus Ministry

Red Door Ministry is our Campus Ministry at Radford University. The monthly mission for July will be to help with additional support beyond what is provided by the Diocesan Higher Education Committee to continue its missional work among the collegiate community at Radford.

Donations received this month will go toward covering the costs of food items not otherwise provided on regular Monday Night meetings, outreach events, gifts given during finals week, and student attendance at retreats and work weekends at ministries like Boys Home and Grace House. This funding will also support other campus groups like UKirk.

Becoming the Beloved Community Pilgrimage at Bisset Park August 17 starting at 3:30—Dr. Wornie Reed, Professor, Sociology and Africana Studies, Director, Race and Social Policy Research Center, Virginia Tech will be speaking.

Mountain to Mountain Partnership (M2M). The M2M partnership is the Haiti collaborative of six parishes in DIOSWVA that is supporting St. Paul’s School in Beaudin Jean Pierre Haiti. For the 2018-2019 School Year M2M was able to pay the teachers and administrators salaries through August 2019, provided lunches for about 200 students throughout the school year and provide $1000 for educational supplies. For 2019-2020 we intend to provide the same support and to visit to better understand how we can best support them. Potential projects include:

  • expanding classroom space by adding two additional classrooms (there are currently four) so that school could serve grades beyond the sixth grade

  • a water project (there is no water in the community)

  • a solar project

The plan is to visit in late October or early November. Does a trip to Haiti sound interesting to you? Might you be interested in getting involved in this ministry? Please contact Jon Greene if you feel called ( greenej@vt.edu 540-553-5846).

Preparing for Next Sunday

Amos 8:1-12
Psalm 52
Colossians 1:15-28
Luke 10:38-42

Amos’s vision of the basket of summer fruit, the prophet’s accusations against Israel’s oppression of the poor and needy, and the threat of a coming day of divine judgment constitute the Old Testament reading for next week. Threatening notes are also sounded in the Psalm, as lying, plotting to do evil, and a devouring spirit are assailed. The magnificent christological hymn, with its bold claims about Christ’s role in creation and unique relationship with God, dominates the epistolary reading. Even so, the latter part of this passage from Colossians spells out some of the implications of Christ’s reconciling work. In the Gospel reading, Jesus commends Mary for her concentration and devotion and chides Martha for being distracted by the insignificant tasks of life.  Here’s your challenge: consider all of the good faith and good works in these readings.
